A popular and beautiful species of wood that we can offer here at Ruby is Cedar. Our range includes both home grown cedar and Canadian Western Red Cedar with several different profiles and designs. One of the few differences between the two is that home grown cedar has a much more open grain, creating a rustic but strong finish and Canadian Western Red is a darker, denser wood that offers a material almost clear of any defects such as knots and tight grains. Both types of cedar are untreated because of the natural, durable and hard-wearing characteristics that cedar possesses. Cedar in general has a wonderful sweet, aromatic smell and therefore people like to use it indoors adding different dimensions to their designs and properties. Our Canadian Western Red Cedar range includes 2x1, 3x1 and 6x1 boards as well as shiplap and shadow gap cladding boards. On the other hand, our home-grown cedar is available in profiles of 6x1 planed and rough sawn, 3x1 and 4x2 planed timber and cladding in tongue and groove and shiplap boards.
Canadian Western Red Cedar
Canadian Western Red Cedar is a well-known timber species with good reason. The versatility of it is immense and the golden, red and brown tones that it has delivers the perfect design for many. It really has a sense of character and personality to it and a unique appearance. Its placed into high regard in terms of its long-lasting capabilities and durable nature with resistance to decay, rotting and algae growth. The slow, natural process of growing this species means that long, natural grains can develop creating a unique appearance. The lightweight properties of the timber means that it is easy to work with and can be changed slightly with ease making it perfect for exterior buildings and structures as it can be fitted quickly and efficiently. Adding to this, it has great thermal properties to help regulate those temperature levels in your buildings, structures and homes adding to the other advantages that it has over other building supplies and timbers.
Home Grown Western Red Cedar
Our home-grown range of western red cedar provides a cheaper alternative to the Canadian range. It is a moderately durable softwood with a more rustic, charismatic appearance as knots and open grains are more prevalent. A multipurpose specie of wood that is relatively faster grown that many providing those straight and open grains. The home-grown range has pale red, and brown colours situated within the boards and overtime, if not treated and protected, changes to a grey, silvery finish. Home Grown Cedar contains high amounts of aromatic oils which naturally helps the resistance against insect and rot attack. The wood needs to have on going drying and even air flow throughout the boards and structure to create a high resistance to insect and fungal attack.
