How to Measure Wooden Driveway Gates
Gate Width
1. Measure the Distance between the posts/pillars
2. To determine what clearance is needed to calculate your gate width, you must decide how you would like your gate hung. Please see below for the options:
Option 1: Gates open towards driveway, with hinges on rear of post
Reduce the width of your gate by 40mm.
(If adding automation, reduce the width by 50mm).
Example: Example: If your posts are 3600mm apart, you will need a gate pair with the total width of 3560mm to make the necessary allowances.
Option 2: Gates open towards driveway, with hinges on the inside of post
Reduce the width of your gate by 150mm.
Example: Example: If your posts are 3600mm apart, you will need a gate pair with the total width of 3450mm to make the necessary allowances.
Option 3: Gates open towards roadside, with hinges on the outside of post
Reduce the width of your gate by 40mm.
Example: If your posts are 3600mm apart, you will need a gate pair with the total width of 3560mm to make the necessary allowances.
Option 4: Gates open towards roadside, with hinges on the inside of post
Reduce the width of your gate by 150mm.
Example: If your posts are 3600mm apart, you will need a gate pair with the total width of 3450mm to make the necessary allowances.
Hinges
For our Entrance Gates, you will need to use Adjustable Band and Hooks hinges. They help correct sagging or shifting over time without needing to reinstall the gate. Hooks allow for simple removal and reattachment, as well as adjustments to the gate's height or position for maintenance or repairs.
You can purchase just the Band and Hooks, or you can purchase our Entrance Gate set which includes drop bolts, a ring latch and a throw over loop (this is recommended).
What size do I need to get?
The hinges will need to be a 1/3 of a single leaf from your pair of gates.
For example, 1 leaf from a 3.0m wide pair of gates would be 1.5m.
A 1/3 of 1.5m is 500mm.
You would then need to convert 500mm to inches, which would be 19.69”. The closest size to this is 24”. Therefore you would purchase 24" Adjustable Band and Hooks.
