Where Should I Install a Pergola?
Where you should install your pergola depends on the layout of your garden, and the lighting you would like for your pergola. Are you looking at installing a pergola in a way to create more shade? Would it be best to have near the front, back or sides of your garden? Let's explore your options.
- Look at how the sun moves through your garden throughout the day, and think about when you may frequently sit there. Would you prefer to sit in the sun, or the shade? Placing your pergola in a place where the sun hits often is a great way to add a cooler, shaded area for you to sit in.
- What are your usage intentions? If you're looking for some shelter for a high-traffic area (for parties, for example), you may want your pergola closer to your house. This can feel like an extension to your home. If you're looking more for a place to relax, further back in the garden may be best.
- Keep in mind your garden layout. Pergolas are big structures, and if you have a smaller space, it may feel like it takes up a lot of it. With this in mind, installing your pergola near a wall or by a corner if you have a smaller garden can help to maximise the space.
- Popular places pergolas are often installed include: walkways (for plant growth and decor), poolsides (for shaded relaxation in the sun) and dining spaces (for some extra shelter). But, your pergola could be used for anything!
All in all, where you install your pergola depends on what you're looking to get out of it. If you need any advice, feel free to reach out to our friendly team members - we're happy to help!

Fixing your Pergola to the Ground: Concrete vs Bolt-Down Pergola Installation
Securing your pergola to the ground can be done in a variety of ways. From bolt downs to concealed post bases, Ruby has you covered. But that's not the only thing to consider - it's also important to think about what kind of ground you're looking to install your pergola on.
- Installing your pergola in the ground. Pergolas can be installed straight onto grass or the ground by digging some holes and placing the posts within them. This will take off some height of the pergola posts, however, and so for this option we recommend our extended post height product.
- Installing your pergola onto decking or wood. For this option, bolt downs are recommended to securely drill your pergola base. The screws will be tightly wedged into the decking whilst connected with the bolt down, to ensure a sturdy base.
- Installing your pergola onto concrete. Using a hammer drill, bolt downs are the ideal choice for this installation location as well. It's recommended to tighten your screws after a few months of being outdoors, to ensure security.
- Installing your pergola onto porcelain. This can be a tricky one, due to the potential of cracks in the tile when installing the pergola. For this, it's recommended that an expert is used for installation, or using a diamond-tipped drill bit. Using the bolt downs and screws, take care when installing your pergola on porcelain.
