How to Measure Wooden Garden Gates
Gate Width
1. Measure the Distance between the posts/pillars
2. To determine what clearance is needed to calculate your gate width, you must decide how you would like your gate hung. Please see below for the options:
Gate open towards property, with hinges on rear of post
Reduce width by 20mm. This is to allow 10mm for the hinges and 10mm for the gate latch.
Example: Example: If your posts are 3600mm apart, you will need a gate pair with the total width of 3550mm for 3 leaf to make the necessary allowances.
Hinges
For our lighter-framed Side Gates, such as our Wellington or Instow gates, you will need to use Tee Hinges.
For our Mortise & Tenon Garden Gates, such as our Highampton Side Gate, we recommend using Band and Hooks hinges. This is due to the gate being heavier and having a thicker frame, so requires more support.

When filling out the information for your gate, you'll be asked what hang you'd like for your gate (looking from the roadside). This essentially means what side you'd like your hinges on.
We ask this because the bracing changes depending on what hang you choose.
The handling of the gate is also crucial during installation to ensure it's properly mounted. Always attach the hinges to the side where the bracing angles upward from the bottom. This will provide the necessary support for the gate, helping to prevent sagging or warping over time.
Please note our gates do not arrive with hinges and these will need to be purchased separately.
