Why Choose Waney Edge Cladding?

Waney edge cladding offers an authentic, rustic appearance that highlights the natural character of timber. With its overlapping profile, it provides excellent water runoff and protection from the elements. Durable, versatile, and eco-friendly, waney edge cladding is perfect for both traditional and contemporary projects seeking a natural touch.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Before starting, gather the following:

  • Waney edge cladding boards: Please note that at Ruby, we only supply boards that are suitable for exterior cladding. Don’t forget trims to complete your corners and edges.
  • Treated timber battens: Provides a secure framework for attaching your cladding.
  • Fixings: Stainless steel screws or nails to prevent rust and corrosion.
  • Breathable membrane: Acts as a moisture barrier while allowing airflow to prevent rot.
  • Drill or hammer: For fixing the boards securely.
  • Saw (hand or power): For trimming boards to size.
  • Spirit level and tape measure: Ensures your cladding is level and accurately cut.
  • Weatherproof finish: Oil or stain (optional but recommended).

Safety gear: Goggles, gloves, and other protective equipment.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Prepare the wall surface for cladding installation:

  • Inspect the wall: Ensure it is clean, dry, and structurally sound.
  • Attach a breathable membrane: Secure it temporarily with tape, then fix it properly using galvanized staples, nails, or screws with washers. This protects the wall from moisture while allowing airflow behind the cladding.

Step 2: Install the Battens

Treated timber battens provide the foundation for waney edge cladding.

  • Measure and mark: Position vertical battens for horizontal cladding.
  • Spacing: Space the battens 400–600mm apart, with additional battens around windows, doors, and corners for extra support.
  • Secure battens: Use screws or fixings suitable for your wall type to firmly attach them.

Step 3: Prepare the Waney Edge Boards

  • Inspect the boards: Check for any defects and allow the boards to acclimate to site conditions for 5–7 days to minimize movement after installation.
  • Cut to size: Trim the boards to the required length, leaving a 2mm gap at edges for expansion.

Step 4: Start Cladding

Now you’re ready to install the boards!

  • Begin at the bottom: Start at the base of the wall for horizontal cladding.
  • Position the first board: Ensure the natural edge faces outward, and the overlapping profile is positioned downward to shed water.
  • Check alignment: Use a spirit level to ensure the first board is straight.

Step 5: Fix the Boards

  • Secure the first board: Attach it to the battens using stainless steel screws or nails. Position the fixings near the top edge so they’re concealed by the overlap of the next board.
  • Overlap and repeat: Place the next board so it overlaps the first, ensuring a consistent and weatherproof fit. Repeat until the wall is covered.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  • Trim as needed: Cut boards to fit neatly around windows, doors, and other openings.
  • Add trims or leave raw: Depending on the desired aesthetic, you can leave the natural edges exposed or add corner trims for a polished finish.

Step 7: Protect Your Timber

To enhance the durability and appearance of your waney edge cladding:

  • Apply a protective finish: Use an oil, stain, or paint to preserve the timber’s color and protect it from weathering.
  • Reapply periodically: Regular maintenance ensures your cladding stays in excellent condition.
