How to Install Loglap Cladding Like a Pro

Timber Loglap cladding offers a classic, log cabin-style finish ideal for sheds, cabins, and garden buildings. Its overlapping profile provides excellent weather resistance and a rustic, durable look.

Why Choose Loglap Cladding?

Loglap cladding offers a unique, rounded profile that adds character and depth to your structure. Its overlapping design improves water runoff and protects your project from the elements, making it an ideal choice for exterior applications. Durable and versatile, Loglap cladding complements both rustic and modern designs while providing long-lasting performance.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Gather these essentials before you begin:

  • Loglap cladding boards
Don’t forget trims for corners and edges to complete the look!
  • Treated timber battens: Creates a secure framework for attaching your cladding.
  • Fixings: Stainless steel screws or nails to prevent corrosion.
  • Breathable membrane: Acts as a weather barrier while allowing ventilation to prevent rot.
  • Drill or nail gun: For quick and secure fastening.
  • Saw (hand or power): For cutting boards to size.
  • Spirit level and tape measure: Ensures accurate alignment and cutting.
  • Weatherproof finish: Oil, stain, or paint (optional but recommended).
  • Safety gear: Goggles, gloves, and other protective equipment.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Start by preparing the surface where the cladding will be installed:

  • Inspect the wall: Ensure it’s clean, dry, and stable.
  • Attach a breathable membrane: Secure it temporarily with tape, then fix it properly using galvanized staples, nails, or screws with washers. This protects the wall from moisture while allowing airflow.

Step 2: Install the Battens

Treated timber battens provide the foundation for Loglap cladding.

  • Measure and mark: Position vertical battens for horizontal Loglap cladding.
  • Spacing: Space the battens 400–600mm apart, with extra battens around windows, doors, and at corners for added support.
  • Secure battens: Fix them to the wall with screws or fasteners suitable for your wall type.

Step 3: Prepare the Loglap Boards

  • Inspect the boards: Check for any defects and allow the boards to acclimate to site conditions for 5–7 days to reduce movement after installation.
  • Cut to size: Trim the boards to the required length, leaving a 2mm gap at edges to allow for expansion.

Step 4: Start Cladding

It’s time to install the boards!

  • Begin at the bottom: For horizontal Loglap cladding, start at the base of the wall.
  • Position the first board: Ensure the rounded edge faces outward and the overlapping profile is positioned downward to shed water.
  • Check alignment: Use a spirit level to ensure the first board is perfectly straight.

Step 5: Fix the Boards

  • Secure the first board: Fix it to the battens using stainless steel screws or nails. Position the fixings discreetly in the overlapping edge for a neat finish.
  • Install subsequent boards: Place the next board so it overlaps the first, creating a consistent profile. Continue until the wall is covered.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  • Cut to fit: Neatly trim boards around windows, doors, and other openings.
  • Add trims and mouldings: Use corner trims and edge mouldings to give the cladding a professional finish.

Step 7: Protect Your Timber

To enhance durability and maintain the appearance of your Loglap cladding:

  • Apply a protective finish: Use an oil, stain, or paint to preserve the timber’s natural color and protect it from weathering.

Reapply as necessary: Regular maintenance will keep your cladding looking its best for years to come.
