Both Home Grown Western Red and Canadian Western Red Cedar are available in a shiplap profile. These boards are perfect for structures like sheds, and exterior walls of properties and buildings due to the clean stylish look that it provides whilst also implementing a water tight structure. Home grown cedar shiplap will have a slightly paler red and brown colour with straight and open grains. You may also find more knots on these boards, which in our opinion, add character and uniqueness. On the other hand, Canadian Western Red Cedar is a much dense and darker option of wood with dark red and golden tones. This type of shiplap will be extremely durable with minimal defects such as knots and open tight grains. The word ‘shiplap’ originates from the wooden overlapping boards that were used to make ships and boats thus creating a weatherproof solution now known as cladding. The traditional look and design of these cedar boards will mean that shadow lines are created under each one producing an interesting and contemporary look.
Cedar shiplap is such a versatile profile of cladding as it can be used inside as well as outside and for various reasons including kitchen walls, bathroom walls, sheds and exterior walls to name a few. The reason they can be used inside is because they are untreated boards. The sweet, aromatic smells of both types of cedar produce different features to the board adding to the appeal and beauty of them. Our home grown Western Red Cedar shiplap is available in lengths of 1.8m, 2.4m and 3.6m. Then our Canadian Western Red Cedar Shiplap is available in a standard length of 3m. The instalment process of Cedar shiplap is relatively easy because of the lightweight properties. You want to start at the bottom of your structure or wall and make sure that the first board is completely level to provide a solid and good foundation to work from. This will ensure all other boards are level but do check each one. To help with the instalment process, we have 50mm nails which can be used to secure the shiplap boards together.
When you buy any type of shiplap from us, and especially Cedar, we want you to enjoy it for many years to come. To help protect and preserve the wood, we would highly recommend Osmo UV Cedar Protection oil to help keep the colours and grains in the wood whilst fighting water and rot. The highly effective oil will optimally match the pigments of the wood to keep the natural colours and grains, whilst also regulating moisture levels which will minimise the chances of swelling or shrinkage. A water and rot resistant oil that creates a breathable finish for the wood and does not crack, flake or peel. We would recommend using this oil every 12 weeks to keep optimal protection of the wood.
