How to buy quality timber – our buying guide

When it comes to buying timber for a DIY project, the best piece of advice we can provide you with above anything else is to make sure that you invest in quality. There is no point in going to the effort of building a decked area or timber planter by using low grade wood which won’t last you very long. Here at Ruby UK we have been selling timber for years so we really know what we’re talking about, and we only stock materials of a high standard.

To make it easier for you, we’ve listed the two things we think you should ask your supplier in order to avoid buying something substandard and feeling disheartened when your project doesn’t stand the test of time…

Where is the timber sourced?

Where the timber comes from will say a lot about the quality. We work closely with our suppliers to provide the quality, consistency, and sustainability that you demand. These are three elements which are vital when it comes to purchasing your timber. You want to ensure your supplier is obtaining high quality timber, every time, and that it is coming from a sustainable source.

Has it been pressure treated?

All of our timber products have been green pressure treated before they go home with you. This is to ensure they have a long life and the perfect finish. All too often people are sold poor quality timber which has not been treated correctly, which is more prone to early rot and problems.

Pressure treatment uses a high-pressure tank to force the preservative chemicals deep into the timber quickly. This makes the wood much more durable and able to withstand damage and exposure to moisture. Not only will pressure treated timber last longer, it won’t need as much maintenance – another bonus!

We hope this has helped you to understand the importance of buying quality timber for your projects. If you have any questions about our range, please give us a call on 01409 231763.
